Air Quality: A Public Health Emergency – UK Wide Public Webinar

Thursday 15 July, 11 am - 11.45 am

Ahead of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) inaugural Air Quality Conference on 12 July the organisation’s Head of Policy Tony Lewis discusses what CIEH is doing to address the UK’s escalating air quality problem. The event will explore the role of CIEH’s brand new air quality advisory panel and the work they have done so far, and also look at the Government’s plans to address NO2 and improve air quality in the UK.

The webinar will include the role of the new CIEH air quality panel, and include discussion of what CIEH and the environmental health profession will be expecting of a new government. For information email [email protected]

National Bike Week

10 - 18 June

Bike Week is an annual event to promote cycling, and show how cycling can easily be part of everyday life by encouraging ‘everyday cycling for everyone’. Demonstrating the social, health and environmental benefits of cycling, the week aims to get people to give cycling a go all over the UK, whether this be for fun, as a means of getting around to work or school, the local shops or just to visit friends.

As the biggest nationwide cycling event in the UK, Bike Week encourages over half a million people to join in events, rethink their everyday journeys and switch to cycling as the most convenient way to get around. There are hundreds of events planned for 2017.

Breathe Easy Week

12 - 16 June

An awareness event focusing on lung health, organised by the British Lung Foundation. This year's themes are air pollution and clean air, and how poor air quality hits hardest people with a lung condition, children and the elderly.

There will be various events taking place throughout the week across the whole country - visit the British Lung Foundation website to find our more about what will be happening in your area.

National Clean Air Day at Medway Council, Kent

Thursday 15 June

Medway Council’s Public Health Team with the Integrated Transport and Communications will deliver a programme of activity. They will be linking the day through other complementary initiatives occurring in Medway in the run up.

National Clean Air Day at Shipley Church of England Primary School, Bradford

Thursday 15 June

Students will do a survey of how people got to school that day. In addition, a banner will be put up along their fence on the major Otley Road asking cars to turn off engines while waiting at the traffic lights. Students will take photos of the traffic at the lights during lunch time, and count the number or cars and HGVs.

‘No Idling’ events in schools across Thurrock

Thursday 15 June

Two ‘no idling’ events will be held at two local schools, and a school competition where children can design t-shirts for National Clean Air Day, with the winner's design being made into a t-shirt.

Hertfordshire County Council and East Herts District Council with other district authorities encourage more children and parents to travel to school sustainably, or to ensure that engines are turned off when outside school, if driving.

The goal is to get as many parents and carers as possible to switch off their engines and help improve the air quality around schools. Visit the Spellbrook Herts Schools' website to learn more.

Activities will include a bike maintenance event for Spelthorne Council staff, including the opportunity to try out an electric bike, and an Electric Vehicle event for Spelthorne Council staff, including viewing and test driving an EV car and van.

Doosan Babcock are encouraging staff to car share, walk or cycle to work, and their fleet management are reinforcing the "no idling" activity. Staff are also encouraged to share what they have been up to on social media.

‘Wear Green to School on Clean Air Day’ is an initiative from Mrs Reeve and the Bishop Wood Junior Travel Ambassadors. There will be information on air pollution, a Parking Pledge and activities around the theme 'Don't Be A Road Monster'.
